Zoals aangekondigd door FIDE (https://fide.com/news/2831) wordt op 1 maart aanstaande de Elo van iedereen met minder dan 2000 rating eenmalig vermeerderd met de waarde volgens de formule “ (0.40) x (2000 – Rating) “ .
Samengevat wil de FIDE hiermee de “Elo deflatie” tegengaan. Auteur van het voorstel Jeff Sonas legt uit:
“Een groot probleem in het huidige FIDE Standaard Elo-systeem is dat de afgelopen tien jaar de ratings veel te verspreid zijn geworden en dat de Elo-tabellen niet echt goed meer functioneren. Rating-favorieten hebben voortdurend moeite om aan hun Elo-verwachtingen te voldoen, en een al te pessimistische formule voor de initiële beoordelingen van spelers heeft uiteindelijk enorme hoeveelheden ratingpunten verwijderd van gevestigde beoordeelde spelers. Ik heb dit effect beschreven als ‘ratingdeflatie’. En ik denk dat de beste manier om dit aan te pakken, zonder een revolutie teweeg te brengen in het Elo-systeem, is om de ratings weer samen te brengen en ook de oorspronkelijke formule minder pessimistisch te maken.“
Om dit te implementeren comprimeert FIDE de ratings tussen 1000 en 2000 naar een bereik van 1400 tot 2000.
Stel: X = nieuwe rating, dan:
(2000 – X) x (2000 – Rating) = (2000 – 1400) x (2000 – 1000)
Na enig herwerken geeft dit:
X = (1 – 0.6) x 2000 + 0.6 x Rating = 0.4 x 2000 + (1 – 0.4) x Rating
Of ook:
Toename = X – Rating = 0.4 x (2000 – Rating)
Voorbeeld:
In het Open de Béthune van 2023 was Stef tijdens bij alle negen ronden de ratingfavoriet. Na vallen en opstaan mocht hij met een al bij al redelijke 5.5 uit 9 naar huis. Ondertussen woog zijn rugzak 27 elopunten lichter. Met “The Big Crunch” was dit verlies beperkt gebleven tot 14 elopunten.

Voor alle duidelijkheid: deze aanpassing betreft enkel de FIDE elo. De KBSB ratings blijven onveranderd. Voor de meeste spelers met een rating van minder dan 2000 zal de FIDE elo dus hoger zijn dan de KBSB rating.

In summary, FIDE wants to combat the “Elo deflation”. Author of the proposal, Jeff Sonas, explains:
“A big problem in the current FIDE Standard Elo system is that over the past decade, ratings have become way too spread out, and the Elo tables aren’t really functioning very well anymore. Rating favorites are constantly struggling to reach their Elo expectations, and an overly pessimistic formula for players’ initial ratings has ultimately pulled tremendous quantities of rating points away from established rated players. I have described this effect as “rating deflation”. And I think the best way to tackle this, without revolutionizing the Elo system, is to compress the ratings back together and also make the initial formula less pessimistic.”
To implement this, FIDE compresses the ratings between 1000 and 2000 to a range of 1400 to 2000.
Assume: X = new rating, then:
(2000 – X) x (2000 – Rating) = (2000 – 1400) x (2000 – 1000)
After some rework:
X = (1 – 0.6) x 2000 + 0.6 x Rating = 0.4 x 2000 + (1 – 0.4) x Rating
Or also:
Increase = X – Rating = 0.4 x (2000 – Rating)
Example:
In the Open de Béthune van 2023 Stef was rating favorite in all nine rounds. After fall and rise he ended the tournament with an overall reasonable result of 5.5 out of 9. In the meantime his backpack contained 27 elo points less. With the introduction of “The Big Crunch” the loss would have been limited to 14 elo points.
